Energy efficient building design

When it comes to building a commercial property, energy efficient building design often isn’t at the forefront. However, it is not hard to implement, we should be doing the utmost best to better the environment, and that starts with building design.

What do I need for energy efficient building design

First things first, you will need to find an architect that knows all about energy efficiency and how you can get the best out of your building. Harrison Pitt Architects, for example, have worked on a number of projects including industrial and commercial buildings. They will be able to help you design your building in a way that not only works for you but also allows the building to be as eco-friendly as possible.

Secondly, you will want to look at different building materials. This can be a tricky part as not all materials will be completely eco-friendly but you can find a fair few that are. As one of the most durable materials which is both structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing, concrete creates a vast amount of CO2 which is, therefore, contributing to climate change.

When it comes to eco-friendly materials, there are not many you can necessarily use for a commercial property. However, recycled plastic is a great place to start, instead of extracting and milling components to create plastics, why not used plastic that has already been used. It not only reduces greenhouse gases but it will also reduce the overall weight of the building while still providing great structure.

Alternatively, you could look at using wood, it retains many advantages and is now being used as a more industrial building material over concrete. Not only do trees absorb all of the CO2 released into the atmosphere but they also take less energy-intensive methods, to make it into a construction material. With the right coatings, wood can also last you a significant amount of time, so while you may think it needs replacing after a couple of years, you are wrong.

Roof Coatings

During the winter and autumn months, your roofing systems take the brunt of the British weather. However, there is only a limit to what they can handle, so it is imperative you have the right roof system and coatings.

UV light and heat during the summer and spring can also have a dramatic effect on the roofing system of your commercial property. Unfortunately, when the roof is exposed to this weather, it increased exposure to membranes on the surface of your roofing system, which over time will break down and will eventually deteriorate and age.

You will also want to think about the general safety of your roofing systems, with constant water and unprotecting panels; it could cave causing a severe injury.

To ensure your roofing system is safe and protected we highly recommend getting a roof coating specialist come to your commercial property and assess your current roofing. Once you have a high-quality coating applied you will soon be able to see a massive difference in how efficient your building is. It has been proven to increase the energy efficiency in both heating and general energy bills. With the right coating your roofing system will experience a decrease in temperature loss, so during the winter months, your bills will not be as costly. It will also help you in other ways such as boosting comfort levels for employees and morale as they will neither be too cold or hot.

Cladding Panels

Cladding is a great way of making your commercial property look more aesthetically pleasing. Not only does it look good but it also provides the exterior of your building with a protective layer. Cladding works as an external insulation barrier for your building which is great if it needs to be warm and toasty inside. If you have a coastal property or you are located in an area with an increased amount of rainfall, the cladding is great for water infiltration; it also prevents your building from experience an extensive amount of water damage.

On Site Spraying

To keep your cladding or external commercial building protected all year round you might want to consider booking in an on site sprayer to spray a protective coating.

There are so many different benefits to on site spraying but one of the main ones being increased lifespan. Cladding can often deteriorate and corrode over time; however, with regular maintenance and coatings, you will notice your cladding lasts over a more extended period of time. Not only does this save you in money over the long run, but you are also more eco-friendly and energy efficient, as new cladding panels do not have to be made nor fitted.

Solar Panels

If you haven’t already, you might want to consider solar panels, during the summer months you can make a significant amount of energy, which can often be used throughout the majority of your commercial building. For some business installing solar panels can actually be fairly lucrative, there is a range of government schemes and feed-in tariffs which can provide you a small profit. You can also sell energy back to the grid that has not been used, this is capped, and how much you receive is often dependant on the size of the solar panels installed but is often still worth it.

The good news is previously you had to receive planning permission for them to be fitted, whereas now according to Solar Power Portal any rooftop solar system which is over 50kWp, will not require planning.

Why Go For An Energy Efficient Design

We should all be doing our bit to help with the reduction of climate change, so what better place then to start with your commercial property. There are a few things you can do to ensure your building is eco-friendly. If you are going to be building a new property, we highly recommend looking for a good architect to assist with the design.

On site spraying, cladding coatings and roof system coatings are all great to consider, as they can make your existing property more energy efficient but also reduce your energy consumption and bills.
