Moray School Buildings ‘Crumbling’

The news that just 30 per cent of the schools in Moray in Scotland currently meet the minimum standard for condition could be the inspiration you need to take a look at your site and assess whether now’s the time to start looking into dilapidation refurbishment.

Apparently, just 16 out of Moray Council’s 53 sites meet the minimum standards, with investment in maintenance restricted in recent years, which has seen the backlog of repairs rise from £59 million in 2016 to around £141 million now, the Press and Journal reports.

Former council leader and head of an independent opposition group George Alexander explained that he believes the situation will only be improved by a change in mindset.

“Other parts of Scotland have done it – they’ve closed some schools or built new ones. All we are doing is refurbishing or replacing what we have when we should be looking to amalgamate.

“There’s been two attempts made at this and it’s been thrown back so there needs to be a change in mindset before anything changes,” he went on to say.

Over the summer, £3.2 million was spent on a make do and mend programme that saw new electrical wiring installed at numerous schools, and new windows and a replacement roof installed elsewhere.

Chairman of the council’s children and young people’s committee sonya Warren made further comments, saying that every building owned by the council is now being examined as part of a review to target resources more effectively.

“As new schools get built the overall standard will improve but obviously we rely on government funding for that.

“You can only do ‘make do and mend’ repairs for so long, which is why we’ve commissioned an asset management review which will assess every school to see where we are and what we need to – it will make sure we are making best use of our money to ensure we’re delivering the best education possible and the schools are fit for the future,” she added.
